What iS A COMMISSIONING CONSORTIUM?

A consortium happens when institutions, ensembles, and private individuals chip in to help a composer reach their commissioning fee. The benefit of this is it allows various organizations to contribute to exciting new works in a cost-effective way for their yearly budget.

The consortium members receive first access to the piece upon completion. Consortium member ensembles are entitled to “first performance rights”. While other consortiums have the lead/head ensemble have rights to the world premiere, what I offer is having the lead/head director be able to comment on the orchestration of the work and actually have an impact on the score itself. I want people to be able to perform my work whenever it works in their ensembles schedule, so the premiere, whether country/region/state/etc. are based on whoever wants to play it first.

After exclusivity expires, the composer may choose to publish and sell or rent the piece to any other ensemble. Consortium member ensembles and directors are listed in the pre-score information of the musical score. This is a great way to support composers directly and redirect your budget towards new and diverse work.

The thought process behind the consortium fee for my works is based on my works containing more components than a traditional band work. The fixed media and visuals require double and triple the amount of work for a completed piece but still keeping it affordable.
